MIDDLESEX — Four businesses featuring handmade items have all landed at Camp Meade over the past three years.
In 2007 The Red Hen Baking Company moved from Duxbury to expand their wholesale distribution of breads, create a full pastry line and open a café offering breakfast and lunch. As warmer weather approaches there will be iced coffee drinks and summer soups. The bakery has turned into a true community space where you can meet a friend or a client. There is free WIFI, a children’s space and lots of fine food and artisanal breads made right here, plus a wide selection of cheese, wine and more to take home. Live music is now a staple on Saturday afternoons.
In September 2008 Nutty Steph’s Chocolate Shop opened their doors and is now offering their large bags of Vermont Granola and a variety of bulk dark chocolates from around the globe. Nutty Steph’s features house-made pistachio maple butter toffee and dark chocolate candied orange peels, along with new spring menu choices of iced drinking chocolate, chocolate frozen bananas, beer, wine, bacon plates and chocolate dipped bacon.
Ann’s Weavery and fiber arts gallery, formerly of Waterbury, moved to Middlesex in February 2009. This is an eclectic gift shop filled with handcrafted wearables, accessories and gifts from talented crafts people from Vermont, New England and elsewhere. The Weavery is also a studio where Ann Lovald, owner, practices her craft, gives individual weaving lessons and sells looms, weaving and knitting books and yarns.
New to Camp Meade in January 2010 is Montpelier Mud, the pottery studio previously located on River Street in Montpelier. The move brings expanded studio workspace and a refined gallery as well as an added vitality to Camp Meade. “I love our new space and it is great to join a community of other artisan businesses” says owner, Mike Sullivan. Montpelier Mud is a full service pottery studio and gallery offering classes to adults, teens and children in addition to rental and gallery space for artists and craftsmen working in clay.
